AIR DRILLING RIG SERVICES FOR CBM PRODUCTION HOLE
Through a competitive bidding process in Sept. 2013, SWPE was awarded the contract for CBM production drilling at Sohagpur, Madhya Pradesh, India.
The project was an exciting challenge for SWPE as this was the first time the company shall be executing a major CBM production well campaign.
The SWPE team made sure that it uses state of the art Rig and ancillary equipment, highly qualified manpower and maintain high standards of spare parts management to execute the project well within the time frame. As the project required faster drilling in wells, it was equally important to move the rig and all the ancillary equipment like Mud Pump, Air compressors, Booster, DG sets, Drill string, Bunk houses etc between wells in the fastest manner possible. SWPE due to the time management and support from the manpower managed to move and spud wells within approximately 10 hours from one location to the other where the average distance between well was approximately 5 KMS.
This program is on-going; SWPE drilled first 50 Wells in approximately 235 days by deploying 1 no. of Production drilling rig which is a record in India. With continual improvement of systems SWPE envisages to drill more Wells in the coming future in the same manner.
DETAILED COAL EXPLORATION IN RAHAM BLOCK, JHARKHAND
Through a Global completive tendering process in March 2012, SWPE was awarded the work for detailed coal exploration in Raham Block, North Karanpura Coalfield, Jharkhand State, India measuring about 16Sq/Km. The project was to carry out topographic survey, fixation of borehole points, land for borehole point & access road, core drilling, geological & geophysical logging, sampling, sample advise, transporting samples to designated labs, processing & interpretation of data and preparation of geological report.
The project was a big Opportunity and a breakthrough for SWPE. SWPE has secured a big volume of Exploration work from Government Organization.
Wherein SWPE had to execute all the activities required for Coal Exploration which includes planning, design, topographic survey, Geology, Geophysical reports etc.
Prior to this program SWPE had completed exploratory corehole drilling for coal in Rajbar 'A block, Latehar, Jharkhand & Andal East, Durgapur, West Bengal but this program is to drill more than 170 core holes with in a stipulated time schedule of 32 months.
The challenges faced by SWPE during execution of program:
- Socio-political & local community issues.
- Core preservation.
- Drilling challenges in Faults & Artesian conditions.
Raham block lies in a highly socio-political sensitive location in Jharkhand. Before the commencement of program, SWPE advance team visited the area and interacted with the local community and made them aware of the exploration program to be carried out by SWPE. After initial resistance from local community our team was able to convince the opinion leaders of the community the importance of the program. Baring a few minor glitches by and large the 28 months program was executed very successfully without a major incident.
Due to the sensitivity in order to preserve the cores, the core boxes were brought back to the camp on daily basis and core logging & sampling was carried out at the camp area.
As per the client requirement SWPE was to carry out drilling in NQ/ BQ size. However since number of faults & artesian condition are encountered in the block while drilling, in order to successfully overcome the difficulty in negotiating these zones, the core drilling in a borehole was normally commenced in HQ size and after encountering these zones, the drilled hole is covered with NX casing and further drilling is continued in NQ size. Though this lead to higher cost of drilling but it helped in achieving better productivity & recovery of core.
SWPE drilled 176 No’s of core holes with approx. 78,000m of drilling in the block. This field activity of the program was completed in July 2014 and SWPE has already submitted Draft Geological Report (DGR) to the client for vetting. Post receipt of comments from client, Final Geological Report shall be submitted to the client. The detailed exploration carried out by SWPE lead to prove around 1 billion tons of coal reserves in the block.
GEOPHYSICAL LOGGING SERVICES FOR URANIUM EXPLORATION
Through a competitive tendering process in Jan 2015, SWPE was chosen to carry out geophysical logging in exploratory wells being drilled in 3 locations in Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh, India. The program required after acquiring conventional logs, geophysical logging using slim whole Spectral Gamma Ray (SGR) tool. The SGR log measures the natural gamma radiation emanating due to each of major-isotopic sources from a formation.
The project was a major challenge for SWPE as this was the first time SWPE shall be undertaking special SGR logging spread over 3 locations in 2 states with 7 rigs deployed. These locations are spread over 1500km apart. SWPE needed to plan to carry out geophysical logging in such a way that there is optimum utilization of logging unit and avoid idling of rigs of geophysical logging.
Prior to this program SWPE successfully completed geophysical logging of more than 80,000m in Coal & for Uranium.
The challenges faced by SWPE during execution of program:
- Maintaining Logging time for SGR & other probes.
- Maintenance of logging equipment & Logging Van.
The SGR tool is a special probe to record the presence of Uranium, Thorium & Potassium in the formation. The logging through this tool is a high precision job and sampling & logging speed need to be tuned to achieve the quality logs within the logging time specified by the client. SWPE logging engineers through their constant endeavours had achieve an optimal method to acquire the log data to the satisfaction of client.
Since the logging unit & trucks are on constant move from one area to another and a weekly maintenance regime has been devised where in the unit and van are being regularly checked and preventive maintenance were carried out. The tools are also calibrated on weekly basis.
This program is on-going; SWPE has deployed 2 logging units for execution of program. To date SWPE has successfully carried out logging in 11 wells. The data has been successfully processed at different sampling interval and the processed results are as per the expectation of client.
